As Good As Dead: The end of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder
Hello everyone! For this week's blog post, I will be reviewing As Good As Dead by, you guessed it, Holly Jackson. Finally finishing the Trilogy. I have had a lot of fun reading this book series Holly Jackson has so gracefully written. I’ve been very excited just thinking about writing this book. So, let’s get started.
TRIGGERS: Drug use, Emotional abuse (discussed), Kidnapping, Murder, PTSD (main theme), Sexual assault (mentioned, past), Stalking, Violence.
As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson is the final book in the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. The main character, Pip, is starting college. As mentioned in the last book, Pip has a true crime podcast. She’s very used to hate and death threats because of the popularity of her podcast. She’s noticed something, there is this constant anonymous person sending the same message: Who will look for you when you’re the one who disappears?
Now, just this bit alone got me even more excited about the read.
The threats escalate and Pip realizes that someone is stalking her, someone knows her every move. And as in the previous two books, the police fail to do anything about it. Pip again must find the suspect; or become the victim. If Pip doesn’t find the answers to this deadly game, she’ll be As Good As Dead.
She finds connections between her stalker and a local serial killer caught six years ago, she wonders if maybe the wrong man is behind bars.
No spoilers here! I absolutely love the realism Pip portrays. Pip’s character development shows realism, how solving murder cases has impacted her and her mental state. Around the middle of the book, there is a groundbreaking plot twist that left me absolutely speechless. Pip, unlike in the other two books, is a lot less likable and her actions and motives are questionable.
The shots of adrenaline I felt as I read made me put the book down several times. The way Holly Jackson writes makes me slowly turn around and make sure no one’s behind me. Reading As Good As Dead made me rethink everything, I had so many questions. I feel as if this book truly breaks boundaries.
I, without a doubt, loved this book. The tension, the confusion, and just how terrified I felt made the book so worth it. I would recommend it to those interested in murder mystery.
I do understand why many do not like this book because it takes a completely different direction from the previous books and destroys Pip’s character and changes her.
I’m very impressed with this series, I’m usually bored out of my mind when reading sequels, but Holly Jackson went above my expectations. I loved all three books, and I will be reading them over and over again. I would say to read the first book to really understand the third and final book.
Thank you,
Kimberly Rivas
I read the first book in this series, but this blog post makes me wanna continue the series!
ReplyDeleteHey Kimberly! I enjoyed your blog, as I did when I read the novel. It was a few years ago, but I really enjoyed how realistic this book was. In a lot of murder mystery novels that I read, they portray the protagonist or detective as the sole hero, and an occasional internal conflict. But when reading the novel, it was just so similar to the real world, showing how not every justice-doer (for lack of a better word) was perfect. And that killers *will* go after the detectives.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really nice post Kimberly! I'm very impressed how spoiler-free this review is. I have still yet to actually read any of the books yet (I really need to) but this post has encouraged me for sure.
ReplyDeleteI've never quite liked solely mystery books, but this does seem interesting.
