A Good Girl's Guide to Murder Novella, Kill Joy

Hi everyone! For this week's blog post, I will be reviewing A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder Novella, Kill Joy. If you have not read my previous blog posts, I talked about Holly Jackson’s famous book series, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and explained my thoughts about the series. I was on a book hunt to see what I would write about this week, and while I was browsing, I found Kill Joy. I haven’t been disappointed with Holly Jackson’s books in the past, so I decided to give it a read.
Kill Joy by Holly Jackson is a Prequel to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murderanother story where Pip is the main character. Pip is invited to her friends1920’s Murder Mystery party, which she does not want to go to. Adding to the role play aspect of the party, the setting in this imaginary island called Joy. While Pip is at this party, she gets drawn into solving the murder mystery, but while she’s figuring out the clues, this murder mystery isn’t the only one Pip is focused on.

In Kill Joy, Holly Jackson writes as if we were in Pip’s head. The plot is a lot less exciting than the previous books, but I like the realistic aspect Holly Jackson includes. What I love most about this book, is the subtle foreshadowing of the main trilogy. All the characters from the main trilogy were included in this book, it was quite an amazing aspect of Kill Joy.

This book’s plot is very straightforward and there weren’t many plot twists. If you want a murder mystery book that is quite lighthearted, I would definitely recommend it.

My overall opinion of Kill Joy: I enjoyed the book. It had all my favorite characteristics of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder trilogy. I know my 10-year-old self would have loved this book. If you like murder mystery but are tired or just don’t want to read much, then this is a great book. It didn’t take much brain power to read, I was basically dead while reading. I would recommend that you read it after finishing the trilogy.

I wonder what I’ll read next, I’m not sure yet.

Thank you for the read,

Kimberly Rivas

  2. This was interesting. While I've read and enjoyed the Good Girl's Guide to Murder series, I have never heard of Kill Joy before. It seems like an interesting idea, and it's cool that the book foreshadows the main series. Thanks for posting!
