Why Do People Want Batman Banned?

Hello fellow bloggers, for this blog cycle, I wanted to talk about my banned book since it was suggested to do so. My book was Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again, by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. The book is a sequel to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. The book is set in the future where all of the main DC superheroes are starting to get old, and they have new teenage superhero recruits helping them out. The villain is Lex Luthor and what looks like a huge frog monster made out of microbots.

The part of the book that was controversial was that New York and the rest of the USA were getting taken over by some very sexualized women, who were giving out false news on main news sources, making all of the weirdos do anything the women wanted them too, but the ladies were on the evil frog’s team, convincing citizens that the superheroes were the bad guys.

My book’s challenges were pretty boring. First off, there was only one challenge, and it was from a small town in Ohio. Second, there was not much information about the challenge and who was in it, as the most detail I found while researching was that they were “a patron of the Stark County District Library in Canton, Ohio.” The challenge talked about the revealing outfits in the book, and the foul and sexual language throughout the book, also calling it a sexist book. However, the library wasn’t having it, so after rejecting their challenge, they then decided to get another copy of the book for their library.

I agree with the library’s decision, because the amount of swear words was minimal, and only added to the dramatic part of the scenes, and for the revealing gals, they weren’t a huge part of the book, only being shown for a few pages mostly towards the start. The book is just another Frank Miller classic and doesn’t need to be banned. Really, no book needs to be banned, because it will have an audience somewhere who will enjoy/want to read it. My only opinion about a ban would maybe make sure younger kids, like 7-year-olds, have permission from their parents, but I’m sure they don’t mind the potty words since I know some 7-year-olds with way worse vocabulary.

If you want to read this book, it should be in the library, but I’m not sure. It’s a quick read, I read it in around an hour and a half, but it’s still enjoyable. If you read it, let me know your thoughts on this challenge, but I don’t think the challenge was necessary.

  1. The people that challenge books make it seem like the entire book is full of bad things. However in the case of your book these challenged sections are very minimal. If I were to see that this book was being banned due to sexual content i would expect the book to be full of it.

  2. I agree with Johnathon, and with your blog post in general. There doesn't seem to be a lot of sexual images based on your description of the book, so why ban it?

  3. I agree with your post Gavin, some times there are many circumstances were a book is banned for just some words. I was expecting a more violent related ban, but it looks like its more sexually related scenes.
