Five Survive: Are the haters right?
For this week's blog post, I will be reviewing Five Survive by Holly Jackson.
As always, I've heard a bunch of mixed reviews, but for this one, I've heard more bad than good. Holly Jackson hasn't disappointed me before, so I decided to give it a read.
In Five Survive by Holly Jackson, we finally get a rest from Pip and move on to a more interesting plot.
Red Kenny, is the new main character Jackson has moved on to. Red is going on a road trip with five of her friends during spring break.
While on this exciting road trip, one of the car's tires is blown out unexpectedly. When the six teens realize, they try and turn back. Next thing they know, all four of their tires are blwon out. How could it possibly get worse? Maybe by realizing that they are in the middle of nowhere with no cell service and that there's a sniper.
They were just a bunch of teens that have obviously been set up. As they're panicking not knowing what to do, one of them finds a walkie talkie. It is revealed that the sniper is out there waiting to shoot anybody who leaves the car. The sniper will not shoot if someone confesses a secret.
No spoilers in this post. But now I'd like to give my own opinion on what I think. Was I impressed? No, I was quite bored If I'm being honest. I was reading with high expectations, but the book was odd. There was still some good plot twists that were interesting, but it didn't feel like a Holly Jackson book.
What I've loved about her books is the realism, subtle foreshadowing, and intense plot twists. I felt like this book lacked those great qualities that I enjoy so much when reading Holly Jackson's writing. It was predictable, unrealistic, and quite slow paced at the beginning.
I will admit that I didn't hate this book, but I would definitely not put it in my favorites. The plot was all over the place and some of the decisions didn't make sense. It may be a decent book for those who don't like murder mystery and realism to be connected.
Overall, I think the book had some potential, but the way Holly Jackson continued with the plot wasn't that good, in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend, but if you like murder mystery, then AGGGTM Trilogy would maybe be something you'd like!
Thanks for the read!
